Holiday Workouts and Tips

Holiday Workouts and Tips

“Holiday workout” may seem like an oxymoron during this time of year when Halloween treats are still lurking around your house, you’re ready to gobble up some Thanksgiving turkey, and holiday parties and celebrations are right around the corner. If you don’t want to have a jiggly belly like jolly ol’ St. Nick, then we’ve got some holiday workout routines and tips to get you through. We’ve gathered together some rockin’ exercises and helpful hints for keeping your fitness goals on track throughout the holiday season. Plus, we’ve created a Pinterest board focusing on today's topic: Holiday Workouts and Tips.

The Secret to Sticking to Your Diet During the Holidays

How can you keep working toward your fitness goals throughout the holidays? Daniel and Kelly from Fitness Blender answer this question in a way that may surprise you. One of the major keys is to enjoy yourself, and stay away from the worry and guilt. The reality is that if you stick to your usual routine except for the few holidays, you should be fine to indulge on those days. It’s okay to splurge a little here and there, if you keep working out and eating clean the rest of the time. The real secret is to stay away from all of the treats coming into the workplace. If you do have some indulgences, don’t skip meals to try to counteract it. This won’t help at all in the long run. There’s a fun blooper section at the end of this video as well.

Helpful Holiday Hints and a Workout Too

Holiday parties and celebrations can wreak havoc on your healthful eating and workout habits. All of the sweet treats and indulgences that come with these events can be difficult to turn down, and being short on time can sabotage your workouts. Elliptical Training Workout Videos and Tips

Elliptical Training to Energize Your Workouts

We’re pumped about elliptical training. Not only do you get an incredible workout, but you also get total body muscle toning too. By increasing your stride length on an elliptical, you can burn more calories without feeling like it's more work. Whether you want to improve your fitness or shed some fat, elliptical training can help you achieve your goals.

You’ll find that there are many benefits to working out on the elliptical, such as lower joint stress than other exercises (i.e. running), greater muscle activation, more core muscle focus, posture improvement and better balance. Best of all, elliptical training saves you loads of time, since you're working both upper and lower body endurance, improving your cardiovascular fitness and tightening your core all at the same time. To give your workout a boost, we've gathered together a few YouTube videos, along with an awesome workout and we created a Pinterest board specifically for elliptical workouts.

Interval Training on the Elliptical

Get on the elliptical with musculoskeletal expert Rowan Ellis for an intense 10-minute interval-training workout. Throughout the workout, Rowan shares vital exercise techniques to put the most impact on your quadriceps and glutes, while keeping the stress off of your lower back and neck.

The exercise intervals include working hard for 40 seconds and increasing the speed for each interval. There is also a 20-second recovery phase between the work hard phases. After that, there are four build-up phases, where the resistance is turned up each time and there’s a 20-second recovery phase between each here as well.

Getting the Most out of Elliptical Training

There are a few common mistakes people tend to make when working out on an elliptical trainer. WINK News fitness expert Mike Drumm explains what those tendencies are and how to achieve maximum results from your elliptical workout. Some of the major slip-ups that can have the most impact on your elliptical workout include:

  • Incorrect or no age/weight information put into the machine
  • Improper form
  • Zero resistance
  • Not changing directions
  • Fail to switch up your workout routine

Gain insight regarding these trouble areas, as well as what you can do to maximize your elliptical workout and achieve the best results:

The Best of Both Worlds

There are times when two worlds collide and incredibly wonderful things happen. This is one of those times. By combining an elliptical workout with circuit training, you get an amazing workout that adds some spice to your training routine. We found this 40-Minute Elliptical + Circuit Workout on The Running Doc and thought you might like to check it out. After every five minutes on the elliptical, jump off to do an exercise using your own body weight. You can increase the intensity to fit your needs. Circuit Training Workouts

Get the Most out of Circuit-Training Workouts

Have you hit a plateau or just want to switch up your workout routine a bit? Then, you're probably going to enjoy circuit training workouts as much as we do. You'll find they provide the ideal combination of strength exercises and aerobic exercises. There are many benefits to circuit training as well:

  • Easily modifiable for all fitness levels
  • Builds total body strength
  • Increases endurance
  • Stimulates weight loss
  • Breaks plateaus
  • Improves cardiovascular fitness
  • Bans workout boredom

In general, circuit training workouts include six to 10 exercises completed consecutively with little to no rest between each. To get the optimal benefits from circuit training, you should not rest for any more than 30 seconds between exercises. For timed circuit training workouts, beginners may want to start with 30 seconds per exercise and increase the amount of time as you advance. You can also shorten the rest time between exercises.

To get you moving, we’ve compiled a few circuit training videos and created a Pinterest board totally dedicated to Circuit Training Workouts.

Cutting-Edge Circuit Training Workout

Let's start out with a maximum results kind of circuit training workout. This routine is designed to define your chest, arms and abs, blast belly fat, and significantly improve your fitness level. • High Knee Run
  • Jumping Jacks
  • Lateral Hops
  • Mountain Climber
  • Skips
  • Split-Stance Single-Arm Rows

Boot Camp-Style Circuit Training Workout

Turn up the intensity with a boot camp-style workout routine. BeFit GO's expert trainers, Courtney Prather, William Copsey and Jessica Blythe, give us a kick butt cross training workout that is designed to build strength, improve agility, increase endurance and burn fat. The 30-Minute Boot Camp Body Circuit Training Workout video is a unique blend of cardio, strength and plyometric exercises.

Before you begin this super-charged 30-minute workout, you'll need to gather these items:

  • Bottle of Water
  • Medicine Ball
  • Towel
  • Yoga Mat

Make sure to focus on proper form and stay hydrated during this workout, where you'll be focusing on your arms, chest, shoulders, back, abs, glutes and legs. Keep in mind, you can modify this circuit training workout to your specific skill level by adjusting weight, repetitions and rest periods. Don’t forget to have a bottle of water and a towel nearby while completing this routine, which includes the following exercises:

  • Broad Jumps
  • Butt Bridge
  • Butt Kicks
  • High Knees
  • Karaokes
  • Lying Quad Stretch (each leg)

Advanced Circuit Training

As you can see, circuit training workouts can vary in the types of exercises, as well as the amount of rest between sets. Keep your circuit training workout moving at warp speed by going from one exercise to the next with no rest in between. One of the nicest things about circuit training is that you can switch up your routine. Whether you choose to add different exercises, vary the amount of time for each exercise, increase or decrease rest times, or change your exercise intensity, you can create a circuit to help you reach your goals.

The following video gives us a glimpse at an advanced level of circuit training to promote fitness and strength. They introduce several exercises with no break in between, such as:

  • Burpees
  • Dumbbell Rows
  • High-Knee Push-ups
