2014 Ferrigno Legacy Results: Top 5 Winners in IFBB Pro Bodybuilding, Physique and Bikini Contests

Meet the Winners of the 2014 Ferrigno Legacy, Held in Santa Barbara, California, November 28-29, 2014

While most of America was recovering from Thanksgiving indulgences over the past weekend, dozens of bodybuilding and fitness pros – and many more amateur bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts – showed off their impressive physiques at the first annual Ferrigno Legacy in Santa Barbara, California.

The 2014 IFBB Ferrigno Legacy Pro event was held on Friday, November 28, and featured four competitions: bodybuilding, men’s physique, women’s physique and bikini. The 2014 NPC Ferrigno Legacy amateur competitions took place on Saturday, November 29, and consisted of more than 40 contests, including bodybuilding, figure, physique and bikini events in multiple classes and levels.

Reporter Tracy Lehr spotlights the inaugural Ferrigno Legacy event and interviews founder Lou Ferrigno for local news stations KEYT, KCOY and KKFX.

In addition to the physique, bikini and bodybuilding competitions, the 2014 Ferrigno Legacy featured a red-carpet event on Friday evening and a “Meet the Legends Q&A” on Saturday afternoon. Both were headlined by founder Lou Ferrigno and included numerous celebrities and bodybuilding legends.

The Secret to Sticking to Your Diet During the Holidays

How can you keep working toward your fitness goals throughout the holidays? Daniel and Kelly from Fitness Blender answer this question in a way that may surprise you. One of the major keys is to enjoy yourself, and stay away from the worry and guilt. The reality is that if you stick to your usual routine except for the few holidays, you should be fine to indulge on those days. It’s okay to splurge a little here and there, if you keep working out and eating clean the rest of the time. The real secret is to stay away from all of the treats coming into the workplace. L-Tyrosine Benefits, Uses, Side Effects and Functions

Tyrosine – also known as L-tyrosine and 2-amino-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propanoic acid – is an amino acid that is found in certain foods and produced by the body. It serves as a building block of neurotransmitters and protein, and supports proper organ function. Functions of L-Tyrosine

As an amino acid, L-tyrosine plays a role in protein synthesis. L-Tyrosine Benefits and Uses

Since tyrosine is involved in producing epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine, it appears to help the body manage the effects of stress. Studies suggest that L-tyrosine may help to enhance memory and mental function under physical and psychological stress, including lack of sleep. It also has been shown to reduce fatigue and increase alertness in individuals who are sleep-deprived.

Numerous sources suggest that L-tyrosine functions as a natural human growth hormone (HGH) releaser, also known as an HGH secretagogue. For this reason, L-tyrosine is believed to have a beneficial effect on athletic performance, helping to build muscle and increase endurance.

Side Effects of L-Tyrosine and Potential Interactions

L-tyrosine supplements are generally considered safe for adults. Some people may experience minor side effects such as nausea, headaches and upset stomach, particularly at high dosages. However, individuals who have been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) or Graves disease should avoid L-tyrosine supplements, as they can exacerbate these conditions due to increased production of thyroxine.

Interactions are possible with some medications. L-tyrosine has the potential to elevate thyroxine levels too high when taken in combination with synthetic thyroid hormones, and it may interfere with the absorption of levodopa (L-dopa) in patients with Parkinson’s disease. L-tyrosine supplements may also cause a severe increase in blood pressure when taken with a class of antidepressant medications known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). L-Tyrosine Research and Studies

Numerous research studies have explored the impact of L-tyrosine supplements on mental function, memory and alertness, particularly in relation to physical and psychological stress such as sleep deprivation and cold exposure. One such study published in the Brain Research Bulletin examined the effects of L-tyrosine on cadets during a weeklong military combat training course, and found that supplementation improved cognitive performance while reducing systolic blood pressure. Another group of researchers reported in Aviation Space and Environmental Medicine that L-tyrosine supplements had the ability to counteract cognitive performance decreases in subjects required to perform continuous work after losing a night’s sleep. Similarly, an article in Physiology & Behavior stated that L-tyrosine supplements helped alleviate working memory decrements in subjects exposed to severe cold.

In Amino Acids and Proteins for the Athlete: The Anabolic Edge, author Mauro G. Di Pasquale asserted that amino acids such as tyrosine, arginine, leucine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) all may potentiate HGH secretion. Research into L-tyrosine’s effects on athletic performance, muscle growth and endurance remains ongoing; however, clinical evidence in support of these benefits has not yet been published.

These claims have been corroborated by other research, including a study reported in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, which found that amla fruit extract “effectively inhibits UVB-induced photo-aging in human skin fibroblast.” A recent article published in Pharmacognosy Research highlighted the beneficial effects of Indian gooseberry extract in relation to cardiovascular health, while studies cited in the Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine and Phytotherapy Research demonstrated its effectiveness as an anti-inflammatory agent.
