L-Leucine Benefits, Uses, Side Effects and Functions

Discover the Function, Sources and Benefits of the Health Supplement Ingredient L-Leucine or 2-Amino-4-Methylpentanoic Acid

Leucine – also known as L-leucine and by its scientific name, 2-amino-4-methylpentanoic acid – is a branched-chain amino acid (BCAA). Because the human body cannot synthesize this essential amino acid, it must be obtained from food sources such as meat, dairy products and legumes. L-leucine is also available in natural dietary supplements, including health and bodybuilding supplements such as Ana-GH, DBol-GH, Cut and Ripped Plus, Amino Shooter and Chocolate Whey Protein.

Functions of L-Leucine

Branched-chain amino acids like L-leucine stimulate protein synthesis by triggering pancreatic islet cells to release insulin. This protein synthesis primarily takes place in skeletal muscle, but also occurs to a lesser extent in the liver and adipose (fat) tissue. It is believed that L-leucine may help prevent or reduce muscle damage, enhance anabolic muscle signaling, lower blood-glucose levels and avoid faulty message transmission in the brain cells of people with certain diseases. It may also decrease serotonin production by blocking tryptophan transport to the brain, thereby reducing feelings of drowsiness and fatigue.

Sources of L-Leucine

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), common dietary sources of L-leucine include beef, pork, fish, chicken, turkey, eggs, cheese and milk. Legumes are another good source – particularly beans, soy and peanuts – as are nuts and seeds (such as almonds and sunflower seeds) and grains (like wheat germ, oats, corn and rice). L-leucine may also be consumed directly as part of a natural dietary supplement.

Leucine Benefits and Uses

Because of L-leucine’s role in protein synthesis, it is often used in health and bodybuilding supplements that are designed to build muscle strength, increase exercise endurance, reduce muscle breakdown and promote muscle recovery. Its ability to inhibit serotonin production means that L-leucine may help prevent or delay fatigue during exercise. L-leucine has also been shown to stimulate the appetite – making it useful for athletes looking to gain mass and weight.

In addition, L-leucine appears to benefit individuals with specific medical conditions. For example, it may help to lower blood-glucose levels in diabetics, and it can improve the health and nutrition of patients experiencing loss of appetite due to hemodialysis, cancer treatments or anorexia. L-leucine has also been shown to diminish symptoms in manic patients, reduce involuntary movements in individuals with tardive dyskinesia, and improve muscle control and brain function in patients with advanced liver disease, including various forms of hepatic encephalopathy.

Side Effects of L-Leucine and Potential Interactions

L-leucine is generally considered safe when taken in normal doses, such as those found in food and most dietary supplements. However, excessive amounts can result in hypoglycemia or vitamin B3 and B6 deficiencies. Users are advised to adhere to supplement dosing information and avoid consuming more than 39 grams of L-leucine per day.

Few L-leucine side effects have been recorded, though some users have reported experiencing fatigue or decreased motor coordination. Individuals with certain medical conditions – including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease), isovaleric acidemia, branched-chain ketoaciduria (maple syrup urine disease) and chronic alcoholism – should avoid L-leucine, as it can pose health risks in these patients. In terms of L-leucine interactions, it appears to decrease the effectiveness of levodopa. Conversely, it can have an additive effect when taken with diabetes medication, potentially resulting in hypoglycemia. Other medications – such as Diazoxide and corticosteroids – can decrease the effects of L-leucine on protein, while thyroid hormone medication can cause the body to break down L-leucine more slowly.

More detailed safety information on L-leucine side effects and interactions can be found on WebMD. As with any medication or health supplement, it is best to consult your physician before taking dietary supplements containing L-leucine.

L-Leucine Research and Studies

Scientists have researched L-leucine and other BCAAs to determine their benefits and practical uses, and numerous studies have indicated a positive effect on muscle strength, exercise endurance and muscle recovery. An article published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology reported that outrigger canoeists using leucine supplements displayed significantly improved endurance performance and upper-body power. In Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism, researchers noted that well-trained male cyclists who took a leucine-protein supplement after intense training subsequently exhibited improved high-intensity endurance performance and lower perceived levels of tiredness. And according to the Journal of Sports Science & Medicine, resistance-trained males who consumed an energy drink with leucine (and other key ingredients) prior to their workout demonstrated a significant increase in the number of repetitions successfully performed.

Other studies examined the impact of L-leucine on protein synthesis. Research findings published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicated that increasing the concentration of leucine in an essential amino acid supplement consumed during steady-state exercise resulted in a greater muscle protein synthesis response during recovery. And in The Journal of Nutrition, researchers determined that insulin and leucine work in synergy, allowing skeletal muscles to coordinate protein synthesis with physiological state and dietary intake.

For additional research related to L-leucine, refer to the PubMed site sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Sensoril® Ashwagandha Benefits, Uses, Side Effects and Functions

Function, Sources and Benefits of the Health Supplement Ingredient Sensoril® Optimized Ashwagandha Extract

Sensoril® is a standardized extract of ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), also known as winter cherry or Indian ginseng. According to its manufacturer, NutraGenesis, multi-patented Sensoril ashwagandha extract is clinically proven and contains the highest, most potent levels of ashwagandha bioactive constituents in the industry. Ashwagandha is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine and is believed to possess a wide range of health benefits, from stress-relief to cancer-fighting properties. Sensoril ashwagandha extract is used in health, beauty and skin care supplements, such as Female Hormone Balancer and Skin Perfect Hair, Skin and Nails.

Functions of Ashwagandha

The chemical constituents of ashwagandha include steroidal lactones called withanolides (12-deoxywithastramonolide, withanolide-A and withaferin-A), along with alkanoids (anaferine and isopelletierine), saponins (sitoindoside VII and VIII) and iron. These active constituents appear to have beneficial effects in relation to physical, mental and emotional health, including adaptogenic properties that aid the body in handling daily stress.

Sources of Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha extract is derived from the Withania somnifera plant, which is more commonly known as ashwagandha. It is sometimes called winter cherry (one of several plants known by that name) or Indian ginseng, although it is not related to the ginseng plant. The roots and leaves of Withania somnifera are most commonly used in ashwagandha extract, though the plant’s berries, seeds and shoots may also be used for medicinal purposes.

Ashwagandha Benefits and Uses

As a dietary supplement ingredient, ashwagandha is usually taken orally to help reduce stress and anxiety, increase energy, enhance concentration and mental acuity, promote restful sleep, reduce swelling and inflammation, support the immune system and cardiovascular health, assist in weight management and protect against the visible signs of aging. Ashwagandha is sometimes applied to the skin as an analgesic (pain reliever) and to treat wounds.

Research also suggests that ashwagandha may be useful in treating a variety of medical conditions. There is some evidence that it may reduce blood-sugar levels in diabetics, lower cholesterol in patients with high cholesterol, and improve attention and impulse control in children with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It has been credited with treating the symptoms of arthritis and Parkinson’s disease, and it may be useful in treating infertility. Notably, ashwagandha shows promise as a cancer treatment. Studies have indicated that it contributes to reduced growth of cancer cells in the breast, central nervous system, colon and lungs while enhancing radiosensitivity during radiation therapy and increasing white blood cell counts during radiation and chemotherapy treatments.

Side Effects of Ashwagandha and Potential Interactions

Supplements containing ashwagandha are generally considered safe for most adults, though women who are pregnant or trying to conceive should avoid ashwagandha as it may induce a miscarriage. Users with sensitivity to ashwagandha might experience an upset stomach or nausea. Since ashwagandha can irritate the gastrointestinal tract, individuals with stomach ulcers should avoid it.

Ashwagandha’s beneficial effects may be amplified when taken in combination with certain medications, which can have adverse results for some patients. For example, because ashwagandha can lower blood pressure and blood-sugar levels, it may interfere with blood-pressure and diabetes medications, causing blood pressure or blood-sugar levels to drop too low. Since it has been shown to trigger increased activity in the immune system, ashwagandha may exacerbate symptoms in people with autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis (MS) or lupus, and it may decrease the effectiveness of immunosuppressant medications. Ashwagandha can increase thyroid hormone levels and interact with thyroid medication, so individuals with thyroid disorders should exercise caution when taking supplements with ashwagandha extract. And while ashwagandha promotes restful sleep, it can cause heavy drowsiness when taken in combination with sedative medications such as benzodiazepines and central nervous system (CNS) depressants.

More detailed safety information on ashwagandha side effects and interactions can be found on WebMD. As with any medication or health supplement, it is best to consult your physician before taking supplements containing Sensoril or ashwagandha.

Ashwagandha Research and Studies

A number of studies have been conducted concerning ashwagandha and its impact on emotional well-being and cognitive function. A group of researchers tested the impact of naturopathic care – including ashwagandha extract – on individuals with moderate to severe anxiety. The results of the study, which appeared in PLOS ONE, indicated that the subjects who took ashwagandha had significantly lower levels of anxiety and demonstrated improvements in mental health, concentration, fatigue, social functioning, vitality and overall quality of life. An article published in Pharmacognosy Research examined the effects of Withania somnifera extract on cognitive and psychomotor performance in humans, and determined that study participants taking Sensoril capsules exhibited significant improvements in both cognitive and psychomotor performance.

Another major area of study has been the use of ashwagandha in cancer research. Studies published in Life Sciences and Clinical Cancer Research found that ashwagandha leaf extract may prevent or decrease the growth of several types of tumors – including cancer cells in the breast, central nervous system, colon and lungs – without impacting normal cells. A 2011 article in the African Journal of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicines summarized a number of medical studies featuring ashwagandha, from its anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties to its neuroregenerative and anxiolytic potential. For additional research related to ashwagandha, refer to the PubMed site sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.

Beta-Ecdysterone Benefits, Uses, Side Effects and Functions

Function, Sources and Benefits of the Health Supplement Ingredient Beta-Ecdysterone, or 20-Hydroxyecdysone

Beta-ecdysterone – also known as 20-hydroxyecdysone, beta-ecdysone and 20-hydroxy-beta-ecdysterone – is a phytoecdysteroid, or plant-derived ecdysteroid. Ecdysterone is present within arthropods (insects and marine invertebrates) as well as various plants and fungi. The plant-based version of beta-ecdysterone is used as an ingredient in natural health and bodybuilding supplements, such as DBol-GH.

Functions of Beta-Ecdysterone

In arthropods, ecdysterone controls molting and metamorphosis. It is believed that plants produce phytoecdysteroids as a natural defense against plant-eating insects, as they can cause premature molting and other metabolic damage. Plant-derived beta-ecdysterone is structurally similar to testosterone and has been shown to affect steroid receptors in animal tests. These anabolic properties have led to its use in health and bodybuilding supplements.

Sources of Beta-Ecdysterone

While ecdysterone is naturally produced in insects, crabs and other arthropods, the type most commonly consumed by humans is extracted from plants and taken in capsule form as a natural dietary supplement. Among the many plants that contain beta-ecdysterone are Suma (Hebanthe Eriantha, also known as Brazilian Ginseng), Maral Root (Rhaponticum Carthamoides), Leuzea (Leuzea Carthamoides), Ox Knee (Achyranthes Bidentata), Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia), Serratula (Serratula Coronata) and Cyanotis Vaga.

Beta-Ecdysterone Benefits and Uses

Animal studies have shown that phytoecdysteroids play a role in protein biosynthesis; these anabolic properties suggest they may have a positive impact on human metabolism. Accordingly, beta-ecdysterone is primarily used in health and bodybuilding supplements to help increase muscle mass, enhance muscle definition, reduce body fat and improve athletic performance. Research has also indicated that beta-ecdysterone may provide other health benefits, such as protecting the cardiovascular system, suppressing degenerative diseases, improving glucose metabolism, supporting wound healing, enhancing skin condition and preventing oxidative damage to human lens epithelial cells.

Side Effects of Beta-Ecdysterone and Potential Interactions

At present, there do not appear to be any known side effects or potential interactions associated with beta-ecdysterone. However, as with any medication or health supplement, it is best to consult your physician before taking supplements containing beta-ecdysterone.

Beta-Ecdysterone Research and Studies

Numerous studies have been conducted concerning the benefits of beta-ecdysterone. Among those cited in support of its use as a bodybuilding supplement is a study by Russian researchers published in Eksperimental’naia i Klinicheskaia Farmakologiia, which found that beta-ecdysterone contributed to muscle mass increases while reducing body fat content in human subjects. Another report published by Czech scientists in Experientia indicated that beta-ecdysterone consumed by Japanese quail resulted in a 115% increase in body mass. And Diabetes, A Journal of The American Diabetes Association, reported an animal study showing that beta-ecdysterone resulted in lower body weight, improved glucose metabolism and enhanced muscle insulin signaling.

Additional benefits have emerged following international research into the use of beta-ecdysterone. Czech researchers discussed the positive biological effects of beta-ecdysterone in Natural Product Communications, theorizing that the substance has the potential to protect organisms from degenerative diseases, suppress neurodegenerative processes and protect the cardiovascular system. Menopause, The Journal of the North American Menopause Society, featured an animal study that suggested beta-ecdysterone could improve skin condition in postmenopausal women. And the International Journal of Ophthalmology published a Chinese study on senile cataracts, which found that beta-ecdysterone could inhibit oxidative damage in human lens epithelial cells

For additional research related to ecdysterone, refer to the PubMed site sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.

L-Arginine Benefits, Uses, Side Effects and Functions

Discover the Function, Sources and Benefits of the Health Supplement Ingredient L-Arginine, or 2-amino-5-(diaminomethylidene amino)pentanoic acid

L-arginine, also known by the chemical name 2-amino-5-(diaminomethylidene amino)pentanoic acid, is an amino acid. Arginine is normally produced by the body and is found in protein-rich foods. L-arginine is also available in natural dietary supplements, including health and bodybuilding supplements such as Somatropinne HGH and CytoSport Whey Protein.

Functions of L-Arginine

The human body synthesizes L-arginine into nitric oxide, which serves as a vasodilator – meaning that it helps widen blood vessels to improve blood flow. It also triggers the release of human growth hormone (HGH) and insulin, and is used by the body to make proteins.

Sources of L-Arginine

Common dietary sources of L-arginine are red meat, fish, chicken and dairy. Other sources include nuts and seeds (almonds, peanuts, cashews, pecans, walnuts, Brazil nuts, filberts, sunflower seeds and sesame seeds); grains and cereals (corn, oats, buckwheat, brown rice and barley); coconut; raisins; chocolate; and gelatin. L-arginine can also be taken orally as part of a natural dietary supplement.

L-Arginine Benefits and Uses

Because L-arginine functions as a vasodilator, it is often used to treat such conditions as heart disease, congestive heart failure, chest pain, clogged arteries, peripheral vascular disease, high blood pressure and erectile dysfunction, as well as headaches caused by swollen blood vessels. Due to its role in stimulating the production of proteins, L-arginine may help promote wound healing, prevent illness-related tissue degeneration, boost sperm production, support the immune system, and enhance bodybuilding and athletic performance.

Side Effects of L-Arginine and Potential Interactions

Oral L-arginine supplements are generally considered safe for most adults when taken in doses similar to the levels normally found in food. Individuals with arginine allergies or sensitivity might experience itching, rashes or shortness of breath. Since L-arginine increases blood flow and may reduce blood pressure, it can interact with nitrates, antihypertensive drugs and sildenafil; accordingly, patients with low blood pressure or bleeding disorders, those who have had a recent heart attack or surgery, and men taking erectile dysfunction medication should exercise caution when taking L-arginine supplements. More detailed safety information on L-arginine side effects and interactions can be found on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) MedlinePlus website. As with any medication or health supplement, it is best to consult your physician before taking L-arginine.

L-Arginine Research and Studies

Numerous studies have been conducted concerning the use and benefits of L-arginine. For example, in a report published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, researchers found that arginine supplements increase growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor-1 serum levels in strength-trained athletes following heavy-resistance exercise. In the Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology and Therapeutics, another group of researchers asserted that L-arginine has been shown to play a role “in numerous physiological processes including nitrogen detoxification, immunocompetence, growth hormone (GH) secretion and insulin secretion” and determined that it can improve vascular function in some patients. For additional research related to L-arginine, refer to the PubMed site sponsored by the NIH.

HGH.com Supplements With L-Arginine

Those seeking to harness the positive effects of L-arginine can find this amino acid in several natural health and bodybuilding supplements from HGH.com:

Somatropinne HGH – In addition to a proprietary blend of fruit, plant, seed and tuber extracts, Somatropinne HGH contains 10mg of L-arginine per serving. As an over-the-counter human growth hormone (HGH) supplement, Somatropinne can help athletes build lean muscle. It also provides weight-loss and anti-aging benefits, and is recommended for those who wish to enhance their biceps, pectorals, abdominals and obliques.

CytoSport Vanilla Whey Protein – Each serving of CytoSport Vanilla Whey contains many beneficial ingredients, including 3g of L-arginine. This low-fat, low-lactose powder mixes easily and is biologically complete, providing the high-quality protein needed to develop tight, toned muscle. It also helps improve recovery from intense training and workouts.

Multi-Pro Chocolate Whey Protein – One scoop of Multi-Pro Chocolate Whey provides 24 grams of protein, including 477mg of L-arginine. It is fortified with vitamins and minerals to provide a complete protein supplement for individuals looking to lose weight or gain muscle.

Hollywood Actors Bodybuilding Workout Videos and Tips

We found some great videos that divulge their bodybuilding workouts, secrets and diets. Plus, we created a star-studded Pinterest board filled with even more Hollywood movie role workouts for you to get an inside look at how these actors transform their bodies to become your favorite big screen characters.

Getting in Shape for the Movie 300

While getting ready to be in the film 300: Rise of the Empire, many of the actors trained over the course of seven months. As they trained, these actor's bodies were put under a lot of muscular and metabolic stress. They never did the same workout twice.

Gerard Butler states, “I think cardio is always a killer. Cardio. Cardio. Cardio. I hate it, but it’s the one that makes the difference. I kind of love to just go in the gym and do weights, but unfortunately, you can’t always get away with that. So, when you combine weights with circuit training, it’s a great way of building muscle in a leaner way and also burning fat because you’re doing a lot of cardio as well.”

Mark Twight, the personal trainer responsible for coming up with the workouts to sculpt those infamous six-pack abs, shares some insight regarding what it takes to get the actors in shape for a film like 300.

Transforming from Jackman to Wolverine

In this video, Hugh Jackman shares his secret, along with what he had to do while filming Les Misérables, which he was working on right before his next Wolverine film. You’ll have to watch the entire video to get the low-down on what he consumes while getting ready to play Wolverine.

L-Tyrosine Benefits, Uses, Side Effects and Functions

Discover the Function, Sources and Benefits of the Health Supplement Ingredient L-Tyrosine, or 2-Amino-3-(4-Hydroxyphenyl)-Propanoic acid

Tyrosine – also known as L-tyrosine and 2-amino-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propanoic acid – is an amino acid that is found in certain foods and produced by the body. It serves as a building block of neurotransmitters and protein, and supports proper organ function. Individuals seeking to boost their levels of L-tyrosine can obtain it through food sources as well as in natural health and bodybuilding supplements such as HGH 30,000 Nanograms, HGF-MAX, A-Max 50 and whey protein mixes.

Functions of L-Tyrosine

As an amino acid, L-tyrosine plays a role in protein synthesis. It is also critical for the production of three key neurotransmitters – epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine – that support the nervous system and influence mood, and it is involved in the production of melanin (skin pigments). Finally, L-tyrosine helps to maintain proper function of the thyroid, pituitary and adrenal glands, which are responsible for producing and regulating hormones.

Sources of L-Tyrosine

The body naturally manufactures tyrosine from another amino acid called phenylalanine. Dietary sources of tyrosine include soy, eggs, turkey, chicken, fish, dairy (cheese, milk, cottage cheese, yogurt), pork, beef, beans, peanuts, mustard greens, spinach, pumpkin seeds, and seaweed. L-tyrosine may also be consumed as an ingredient within natural dietary supplements.

L-Tyrosine Benefits and Uses

Since tyrosine is involved in producing epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine, it appears to help the body manage the effects of stress. Studies suggest that L-tyrosine may help to enhance memory and mental function under physical and psychological stress, including lack of sleep. It also has been shown to reduce fatigue and increase alertness in individuals who are sleep-deprived.

Numerous sources suggest that L-tyrosine functions as a natural human growth hormone (HGH) releaser, also known as an HGH secretagogue. For this reason, L-tyrosine is believed to have a beneficial effect on athletic performance, helping to build muscle and increase endurance.

Side Effects of L-Tyrosine and Potential Interactions

L-tyrosine supplements are generally considered safe for adults. Some people may experience minor side effects such as nausea, headaches and upset stomach, particularly at high dosages. However, individuals who have been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) or Graves disease should avoid L-tyrosine supplements, as they can exacerbate these conditions due to increased production of thyroxine.

Interactions are possible with some medications. L-tyrosine has the potential to elevate thyroxine levels too high when taken in combination with synthetic thyroid hormones, and it may interfere with the absorption of levodopa (L-dopa) in patients with Parkinson’s disease. L-tyrosine supplements may also cause a severe increase in blood pressure when taken with a class of antidepressant medications known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). More detailed safety information on L-tyrosine side effects and interactions can be found on the University of Maryland Medical Center website. As with any medication or health supplement, it is best to consult your physician before taking dietary supplements containing L-tyrosine.

L-Tyrosine Research and Studies

Numerous research studies have explored the impact of L-tyrosine supplements on mental function, memory and alertness, particularly in relation to physical and psychological stress such as sleep deprivation and cold exposure. One such study published in the Brain Research Bulletin examined the effects of L-tyrosine on cadets during a weeklong military combat training course, and found that supplementation improved cognitive performance while reducing systolic blood pressure. Another group of researchers reported in Aviation Space and Environmental Medicine that L-tyrosine supplements had the ability to counteract cognitive performance decreases in subjects required to perform continuous work after losing a night’s sleep. Similarly, an article in Physiology & Behavior stated that L-tyrosine supplements helped alleviate working memory decrements in subjects exposed to severe cold.

In Amino Acids and Proteins for the Athlete: The Anabolic Edge, author Mauro G. Di Pasquale asserted that amino acids such as tyrosine, arginine, leucine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) all may potentiate HGH secretion. Research into L-tyrosine’s effects on athletic performance, muscle growth and endurance remains ongoing; however, clinical evidence in support of these benefits has not yet been published.

For additional L-tyrosine research, refer to the PubMed site sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Get the Most out of Circuit-Training Workouts

Have you hit a plateau or just want to switch up your workout routine a bit? Then, you're probably going to enjoy circuit training workouts as much as we do. You'll find they provide the ideal combination of strength exercises and aerobic exercises. There are many benefits to circuit training as well:

  • Easily modifiable for all fitness levels
