Tribulus Terrestris Benefits, Uses, Side Effects and Functions

Discover the Function, Sources and Benefits of the Health Supplement Ingredient Tribulus Terrestris, or Caltrop

Tribulus terrestris – also known as caltrop, devil’s weed, devil’s thorn, puncture vine or simply Tribulus – is a fruit-bearing herb that grows in subtropical regions. Extracts from the plant have long been used in traditional Chinese and Indian Ayurvedic medicine to promote virility and vitality, and to treat health complaints. Today, Tribulus terrestris is often used as an ingredient in health and bodybuilding supplements, such as HGH Testosterone Plus, Anapolan-MAX 50, ClenXDV and RoidX Juice.

Functions of Tribulus Terrestris

Various constituents of the Tribulus terrestris plant are credited with its beneficial properties. Protodioscin, the plant’s primary bioactive component, appears to enhance libido and sexual function by increasing sex hormone levels. Its saponins are believed to have cytotoxic and antihyperlipidemic effects, while tribulosin demonstrates cardioprotective properties. Because Tribulus terrestris may have the potential to increase testosterone levels, some theorize this can translate to a positive impact on body composition and athletic performance.

Sources of Tribulus Terrestris

Native to Asia, Africa and southern Europe, Tribulus terrestris is harvested for its extracts. The plant should not be consumed raw, as its spine-covered fruit is considered unsafe to eat; in fact, some reports indicate that eating Tribulus fruit may cause collapsed lungs. However, its extracts have been used in traditional medicines and natural dietary supplements for many years. Tribulus extracts may be derived from the root, leaf or fruit of the plant.

Tribulus Terrestris Benefits and Uses

In traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, Tribulus terrestris has been used to enhance libido and sexual function, increase energy and strength, and treat a variety of health issues, such as heart problems, chest pain, skin disorders and kidney stones. Preliminary research suggests that Tribulus extract does indeed deliver many potential health benefits, from lowering blood pressure and blood glucose levels to supporting cardiovascular and organ health. It has also been shown to have analgesic (pain-relieving), anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Furthermore, some evidence suggests it may have future potential for treating breast, prostate and UVB-induced skin cancer.

Due to its purported aphrodisiac and erectogenic effects, Tribulus extract is commonly used as an ingredient in supplements designed to enhance male sexual health. It can also be found in bodybuilding supplements that are formulated to improve muscle strength and lean mass; and its cardioprotective and analgesic properties may further benefit those engaged in intense training or exercise.

Side Effects of Tribulus Terrestris and Potential Interactions

Supplements containing Tribulus terrestris extracts are generally considered safe for healthy adults. Some minor side effects have been reported, such as gastrointestinal irritation, gastric reflux and difficulty sleeping. However, individuals with certain medical conditions should exercise caution when taking supplements containing Tribulus extract. Some evidence suggests it may worsen prostate conditions or prostate cancer and can potentially harm fetal development, so men with prostate issues and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid Tribulus extract.

Because Tribulus terrestris has been shown to lower blood pressure and blood sugar levels, it may cause blood pressure or glucose levels to drop too low if taken in conjunction with antihypertensive drugs or diabetes medication. Tribulus extract can cause more frequent urination, and may increase the effects of other diuretics. Using Tribulus supplements with the blood thinner clopidogrel may increase the risk of blood clots.

More detailed safety information on Tribulus terrestris side effects and interactions can be found on healthcare websites such as WebMD. As with any medication or health supplement, it is best to consult your physician before taking dietary supplements containing Tribulus extract.

Tribulus Terrestris Research and Studies

Numerous studies have examined the health benefits of Tribulus terrestris. Resarch published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, Life Sciences, Ancient Science of Life and Phytotherapy Research support its antihypertensive and cardioprotective effects, while studies published in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences and Indian Journal of Experimental Biology demonstrates its anti-diabetic properties. Its potential as a cancer-fighting agent has been documented in numerous publications, including the Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention, Journal of Ethnopharmacology, Neoplasma, Pathobiology and Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology.

A review in the Journal of Dietary Supplements attempted to determine the effect of Tribulus terrestris on testosterone concentrations, and reported that a number of animal studies displayed a significant increase in serum testosterone levels after Tribulus administration, but the effect was only noted in humans when Tribulus was administered as part of a combined supplement therapy. However, a pilot study published in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy found that men with partial androgen deficiency experienced statistically significant increases in testosterone levels and erectile function following Tribulus supplementation.

Several studies have examined the impact of Tribulus terrestris supplements on athletes. A review published in the Journal of Human Kinetics concluded that there is little reliable data on the usefulness of Tribulus supplements in competitive sports. However, a group of Lithuanian researchers published positive findings in the Fiziolohichnyĭ Zhurnal and Acta Medica Lituanica, reporting that athletes on a 20-day regimen of Tribulus terrestris supplements experienced significant increases in anaerobic alactic muscular power, aerobic capacity and blood testosterone, as well as reduced lactate concentration. In light of the limited and conflicting findings in this area, further clinical studies are needed to definitively support the effects of Tribulus terrestris on the testosterone levels, athletic performance and body composition of athletes and bodybuilders.

For additional Tribulus terrestris research, refer to the PubMed site sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

L-Glycine Benefits, Uses, Side Effects and Functions

Discover the Function, Sources and Benefits of the Health Supplement Ingredient L-Glycine, or Aminoacetic Acid

Glycine – also known as L-glycine, aminoacetic acid or aminoethanoic acid – is the smallest of the 20 amino acids in the human body. It is considered a nonessential or conditionally essential amino acid, which means that it is normally produced by the body in sufficient amounts; however, dietary supplementation may be beneficial in times of illness or stress, or for the treatment of certain diseases. L-glycine is found in some food sources as well as in health and bodybuilding supplements such as HGF-MAX, HGH 30,000 Nanograms pills and spray, and whey protein mixes.

Functions of L-Glycine

As an amino acid, glycine is involved in protein synthesis. It appears to work in concert with L-glutamine to improve brain function, and it is one of three amino acids – along with proline and hydroxyproline – that make up the triple-helical structure of collagen. Evidence also suggests that L-glycine may stimulate human growth hormone (HGH) production, acting as a natural HGH releaser.

Sources of L-Glycine

The body manufactures glycine using another amino acid called serine. Dietary sources of l-glycine include protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, dairy and legumes. L-glycine may also be consumed as an ingredient within natural dietary supplements.

L-Glycine Benefits and Uses

Therapeutic uses of L-glycine include the treatment of schizophrenia, stroke and leg ulcers. It also appears to enhance wound healing, and may help protect the liver and kidneys from the harmful effects of certain chemicals. Evidence suggests that L-glycine functions a natural HGH releaser, or HGH secretagogue; as a result, it may have a beneficial effect on athletic performance, such as helping to build muscle and increase endurance.

Side Effects of L-Glycine and Potential Interactions

L-glycine supplements are generally considered safe for adults; no serious side effects have been reported, even at doses as high as 60 grams per day. A small number of people have experienced stomach upset, nausea or vomiting, which ceased as soon as L-glycine supplementation was discontinued.

While L-glycine appears to enhance the beneficial effects of most drugs used to treat schizophrenia, it has been shown to decrease the effectiveness of one particular antipsychotic drug known as clozapine (Clozaril). Patients taking clozapine should avoid L-glycine supplementation.

More detailed safety information on L-glycine side effects and interactions can be found on the NYU Langone Medical Center website. As with any medication or health supplement, it is best to consult your physician before taking dietary supplements containing L-glycine.

L-Glycine Research and Studies

In addition to research on the use of glycine to treat medical conditions such as schizophrenia and strokes, a number of studies have explored the impact of L-glycine on HGH secretion. One such study published in Acta Endocrinologica found that intravenous glycine infusions produced a significant increase in serum HGH levels. Another study cited in Nutritional Neuroscience indicated that an oral supplement containing glycine, glutamine and niacin increased HGH secretion in healthy middle-aged and elderly subjects. In Nutrients as Ergogenic Aids for Sports and Exercise, the author conducted a research review and summarized his findings; he noted that a number of studies concur that glycine appears to stimulate HGH release and promote creatine synthesis, which can be beneficial for athletes undergoing progressive weight training.

Several other studies have examined the effects of L-glycine supplementation in relation to athletic performance and recovery. In Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, researchers found that an oral treatment of glycine and L-arginine salt of alpha-ketoisocaproic acid calcium (GAKIC) increased muscle torque and work sustained during intense acute anaerobic dynamic exercise, and enhanced overall muscle performance by delaying muscle fatigue during the early phases of anaerobic dynamic exercise. A recent animal study featured in Connective Tissue Research explored the effects of green tea and glycine on tendinitis, which commonly afflicts athletes, and determined that a green tea and glycine diet has beneficial effects that aid in the recovery process of the tendon after tendinitis.

For additional L-glycine research, refer to the PubMed site sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

In Celebration of All Military Veterans

For all of you who have served or are serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, we thank you. We appreciate everything you do to defend this great nation and our freedoms throughout your service. We've compiled a few inspirational military workout videos and photos for you, as well as a special tribute to all U.S. military veterans.

Workout Like the U.S. Navy SEALs

Navy SEALs train to fight and win, and firmly believe that, "Failure is not an option." They are amazing individuals who give their all every day. Today, we get a glimpse at the type of workouts Navy SEALs endure. Navy SEAL Instructor, Lt. Dana DeCoster, introduces us to some intense Navy SEAL workouts.

The first Navy SEAL workout we see consists of as many sets as you can do in 20 minutes of the following exercises as well as substitutions for those who don’t have the specialized equipment needed:

  • 5 Overhead Squats
  • 10 Glute/Ham Situps
  • 10 Glute/Ham Back Extensions

This video also covers a basic Navy SEAL workout where you do five rounds of each of the following exercises as quickly as you can:

  • Rope Climb (or 15 Pull Ups)
  • 30 Pushups
  • 50 Air Squats

There is one more workout in this video that covers three simple lifts, including:

  • Squat
  • Shoulder Press
  • Dead Lift

The workout consists of five sets of five repetitions for each exercise, increasing the weight for each set.

What It's Like to be Military Strong

Be inspired by this motivational Military Muscle video. Take a look at these service men and women who take their bodies to the limit. All of the individuals in this video are active duty, reserve or former military from the United States Marine Corp, Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Seabees. And, they are all incredibly amazing too.

Thank You for Your Service

The HGH.com family appreciates all of the service men and women who have served our great nation in the United States Armed Forces. Thank you for your dedication, sacrifice and all that you do to serve, protect and defend our freedom. We found this Veterans Day video tribute we dedicate to you.

Three Ways to Enhance Bodybuilding Progress with Hormone Supplements

Three ways to get better bodybuilding
results with HGH Supplements

3 Tricks for Faster Bodybuilding Results with Natural HGH Supplements

As a bodybuilder, your goal is to make the largest possible gains in muscle strength, density and mass while minimizing gains in fat and excess water weight. After all, bulking up too much during the bodybuilding off-season will leave you with an unrealistic amount of weight to lose when it comes time to cut the fat and get lean for a bodybuilding competition. As such, bodybuilders need a way to make their physical gains as efficient as possible, without putting on extra non-lean body mass.

Taking natural growth hormone supplements, used in combination with a rigorous strength training and cardio plan and a sound nutritional diet, is the best way of achieving this. However, just taking random human growth hormone supplements at random intervals and hoping for progress is far from efficient. Our supplements are incredibly powerful, but they work in conjunction with your efforts. The following tricks will allow you to maximize the effectiveness of your natural growth hormone supplement routine.

1. Take Natural Growth Hormone Supplements After Your Strength Training Workout

Although few realize it, some natural growth hormone supplements are actually best taken after a strength training workout rather than before it - (Note I refer to "some" and not "all"). This is because some natural growth hormone supplements are excellent for speeding the recovery of your muscles. When you engage in an intense strength training session, your muscles will incur tiny rips and tears in their fiber. Protein is required to repair these rips and tears, and natural human growth hormone makes it easier for protein to complete this job. The result is a shorter recovery period, allowing you to get back in the weight room to start working that same muscle group sooner.

Unless your supplement is specifically designed for increasing your energy for your workout - maybe take it after.

2. Perform Explosive Exercises

Explosive exercises are ones that have you lifting a relatively large amount of weight over a relatively short number of reps. Unlike rhythmic exercises, which require a small amount of resistance and a large amount of reps in order to enhance muscle definition and toning, explosive exercises focus on building muscle mass, strength and density. It all depends on your goals - some people want tone, but many want the mass gains that bodybuilders achieve. In order to get mass gains - you need to perform explosive workouts.

Explosive exercises are also excellent for enhancing your body's natural levels of growth hormones. By performing explosive exercises such as dead lifts and squats, you'll maximize your body's ongoing concentration of natural growth hormones.

3. Get Plenty of Sleep

Studies show that roughly 70% of the body's natural growth hormones are produced during sleep. Other studies indicate that up to 95% of muscle growth occurs exclusively while you're asleep as well. If you're not giving yourself 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night, you're robbing yourself of major bodybuilding progress. In fact, if you take natural growth hormone supplements and fail to get adequate sleep, you'll cancel out the effects of some supplements. Regardless of supplementation, your body is your best possible source of growth hormones. Supplementation should add to your body's level of growth hormones, not make up for deficits you're incurring by losing sleep.
